Prepare my dog for classGreat question! As we use positive reinforcement training methods, we ask you to bring your dog with a plain flat collar or a harness. We also would like you to use a straight flat leash (rather than a retractable or bungee type). Bring LOTS of very small (pea-size) treats, preferably of varying "value". Kibble, for example, can be a great "low-value" reward. Hot dogs, steak and cheese are examples of "high-value" rewards. Remember that it is your DOG that decides if a treat is high value or not! Because we do use treats as a reward, we recommend not feeding a full meal right before a class. If your dog is on the higher end of excitability, it can be helpful to exercise your dog before class. Remember that we are here to have FUN with our dogs!

CancellationsEach booking you make shows the cancellation policy for that session/class/workshop. This will show any base cancellation fee as well as time-related fees based on time between your cancellation and the first class of the session/class/workshop. In general (there are some sessions/classes where this differs; workshops have a different policy) there is a base cancellation fee (due to fees charged by our credit card processor) that is clearly stated in the policy when you book. Additionally, if you cancel within a stated time (often 7 days) before the 1st week of the session or class you are eligible for a refund less the base cancellation fee. After that (usually between 7 days before and 72 hours before) you are subject to a late cancellation fee. After 72 hours before the 1st week of class, there is no refund. Please be sure to read the policy when you enroll in a class - you will have to agree to it to complete your booking. CANCELLATION FEE DEFINITIONS: Base Cancellation Fee Fee charged for any cancellation at any time after booking. This covers the fees we are charged by the credit card processor even if the total amount paid is refunded. This fee is specified when any booking is made and must be agreed to before the booking is finalized. RefundsRefunds are calculated based on the cancellation policy for each session/class/workshop. Please read the policy when you book - you must agree to it to finalize your booking. Due to changes in how we are charged by the credit card processor, we are having to charge a base cancellation fee to cover the cost the processor charges us. This is clearly stated as a cancellation fee in the policy when you book. You can move your class to another class without incurring this cancellation fee. Additionally, you can leave the balance on your account (after any time related fees are applied) and not be charged the base cancellation fee. Refunds must be processed manually, and can only be processed to same card that was originally charged. Females in Heat in ClassFemales in heat may participate in class if they are wearing appropriate covering. Please consider that your female leaves an odor behind, and for agility that odor can remain on our equipment. For Conformation, females in heat do participate without covering. This can be distracting to males in the ring. While they would be uncovered in a show, please have your female in covering during conformation class.

Use of Different Training ToolsSo glad you asked! As our training philosophy is positive reinforcement/force free, we follow the "Humane Heirarchy". Here's a graphic to help explain what that is (Link to FaceBook post this came from here): You may notice that tools such as different types of collars (shock, pinch) would appear in the yellow caution or the red section. We work to stay in the Green area for the reason given in the yellow & red - it can break trust with your dog. At Four Paw Sports, our tag line is "...where relationship matters!" We have many different ways to stay in the green, and want to keep the dog in a happy and connected training mode. We do understand some people looking to address a behavior may have gone to less knowledgable sources (big box pet stores, or dare I say the internet in general!) and been told a tool like a pinch collar is the answer. Our goal is to teach you how to successfully move away from that tool, and actually teach your dog the correct behavior. Certainly in our "fun" classes like agility, rally or scent work, these tools can create a mind-set in your dog that it isn't good to try something new. So we do not permit "aversive" tools in those areas. We will not use them in our manners class, and will advise they be removed in class. If you have any questions about all this, please email us at info@fourpawsports.com.

Use of Food in TrainingWe do often use food in training, but food is not required. What IS required is something that your dog will be willing to work for, and see as a reward. There are 2 ways we use food in training: Luring - this is when we show the dog the food, and use it to move our dog into a certain position. Reward - the dog performs the behavior. We "mark" or click the behavior exactly when they perform it, and then reach for the food as a reward. The basic difference is when the food appears - a lure appears before the dog does the behavior, a reward appears after the dog does the behavior. We try to move away from using a lure ASAP. Once we can get the behavior from the dog with a lure, repeat with lure only 2-3 times. Then switch to a "fake" lure, mark/click the behavior, and only then reach for the reward. Ideas for things that are not food that might be rewarding to your dog: Toys (tugs, balls) A "real life" experience - like being able to stay at the door and then go outside Praise certainly can be a reward; however, it tends to have a lower value when used in higher distraction/more difficult settings.
